Schutzverein Deutscher Rheder was founded on 27th June 1901 in Hamburg by German shipowners as a mutual insurance association.

Supporting members in disputes arising out of charterparties is the core activity of the Association as a FD&D underwriter (Freight, Demurrage & Defence). In that context, there is access to a worldwide network of trusted agents and specialized lawyers in the most important port cities.

Since 2023, ship-managers can also become a Member of the Association in which case the focus is on disputes arising under management contracts. A manager membership is only possible if and as long as there is no membership of a shipowner, bareboat or time charterer in relation to the ship in question.

In these and in similar cases the Association provides legal defence and covers court or arbitration costs as well as lawyers' and experts' fees in accordance with its Statutes and the resolutions of the Members' Meeting.
